Romance (1999, R)
wow, this movie has such awesome dialogue, I thought!!! Uber cool, written & directed by Catherine Breillat, I thought it was scrumptious both visually and intellectually, as well as getting me with the emotions/feelings!! Acting is great! I loved it. |

The Princess and the Warrior (2002, R)
Der Krieger und die Kaiserin is a beautiful, sublime drama with great Thriller undertones (dark, ominous tones). It is shot so wonderfully. A German film with German and a little English language. It is not loaded with dialogue and at times there is more than others but all in all, the dialogue is minimalistic to some extent because it takes a back seat to the wonderful cinematography. And the story is told in the eyes and faces of the characters. Nominated for many Euro awards. |

Young People Fucking (Y.P.F.) (2007, Unrated)
This movie should get 5 stars just on principle, but no seriously, I thought it was so lol funny. And I usually judge comedies on how much I laugh and how hard I laugh. Yeah so I am a pervert, this was really good. Not so much about sex, PER SE, but about the relationships, conversation and even just the body language. Almost like anti-porn because some of the scenarios are so real. Good cast, acting, directing, shots, lighting, script, soundtrack, etc. Watch through the credits, too for a little blurp at the end. |

Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004, R)
Amazing, epic, 2-1/2 hour accounts from 2 books "Inside Hitler's Bunker" and "Until The Final Hour". It is a telling of Hitler's last stenographer. She was with him his last 2-1/2 years. It is not only a telling of the downfall of Hitler, but also gives insight into the downfall of Berlin and The Third Reich. The cast and performances are awesome. Fantastic movie, very heavy and dark subject matter very well done. |

El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007, R)
Wow, at first I was not interested in this movie because I mistakenly thought it was another lame horror wannabe. I thought the premise was fitting for Friday night CBS (not real scary). Boy, was I wrong, not about the story per se, but the quality of this movie. One of my best friends watch this with his wife (what??) and she liked it!! And she hates horror. They said it was really good. So I changed my Not Interested to Want To see and boy am I glad I did!! For me this film's strength is not in the story but in the storytelling. I wish I could make a movie this good!!! My hat is off to all involved. I recommend this because it is strong on Suspense and Mystery, the horror is strong, not gore but dramatic. For me, it had a great ending which I was surprised to find in a "horror" movie but again, this is not an average horror movie. If any of this sounds interesting, do not read the plot or anything about it. Just watch it and enjoy the process. Worth seeing! |

Before Sunset (2004, R)
I liked this better than Before Sunrise even though it's 30 minutes less. Before Sunrise was more romantic to me and Before Sunset packed a dramatic punch for me. I love the camera shots, the long takes, the great conversation, the way the camera follows or doesn't follow them (as they walk off screen up the stairs). It has some awesome lines. It also reminded me of Conversations With Other Women. |

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) (2007, PG-13)
"Let your imagination set you free," Incredible true story. Best Achievement in Cinematography, Directing, and Editing. Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Published. It started out for me very slowly, painful to watch, but what an experience, like the butterfly from the cocoon. It speeds up once the butterfly starts to stretch his wings. I thought it was very subtle and powerful. Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, Anne Consigny, Max von Sydow & Mathieu Amalric are a powerhouse cast. |

The Wackness (2008, R)
I liked it and was not disappointed. I was expecting something more from this movie because of the good responses from Sundance. To me, it seemed to have 4 acts. And at the end of the first 2, I was surprised when the movie seemed to take new direction and focus more on other characters and plots, in a sort of subtle way -not over the top. Good soundtrack from 1994. I like Aaron Yoo and he seems to have a little more edge, not really in a good way, but he pulls it off I thought. Sir Kingsley was a surprise and really comes on later in the film. I thought Josh Peck did very well for the script. Olivia Thirlby is a scene stealer, in a good way. Mary-Kate's little role is pretty funny and it was nice to see her doing her thing. Famke Janssen's character was too shallow so there was not much to see but she is there nevertheless smoking like a train and aloof as hell. Even the scene when she is working out, stepping in her spandex in front of the TV, I was just left wanting something more, deeper maybe, but definitely more. Overall the drugs and teen angst end up leading to philosophy and making/finding meaning. |
