Had fun watching this after not having seen it for almost 20 years. Better story than Part 2 for sure, but this is where Freddy stops becoming scary and starts trying to be the class clown. And his voice changes throughout, whats up with that?

Wes Craven is back, and the movie goes back to the original storyline from the first movie.
The beginning part of movie is still okay, but the plot is too weak and finally, it end up to a fucked up resolution.
The idea of "dream warrior" to fight against Freddy is just too stupid....

there was a lot of good death scenes in this film but it was starting to squeeze the stone a bit and the magic was really gay and the acting

Finally we come to the Freddy Krueger installment in my marathon of Slasher third installments. I had liked the first Nightmare, but I didn?t love it; the second film however was a horrible bizarre movie that broke the logic of the original and which seemed to have strange homophobic/homoerotic undertones.

Seeing this third installment, I think the main strength of the series is its relative originality within the genre. I think what made Nightmare strike a chord was that it wasn?t brazenly ripping off the Halloween formula of speechless masked killer with a knife slowly chasing coeds around. Watch that film and you?ll find that it generally doesn?t follow many of the rules that Scream (also from Wes Craven) was making fun of. The second installment, awful as it was, at least wasn?t a re-tread of the original. The third film in the series also seems to have a fair share of original ideas, but one can see a new Nightmare formula being formed.

This film, written by Wes Craven (who didn?t work on the second) and a then unknown Frank Darabont. This script seems to have some real thought to it, Freddy?s scheme to make his murders look like suicides was clever, the mental institution setting was a good twist, and the whole thing has a very interesting and sort of subversive ?the kids are allright? subtext that is a nice relief from the moralizing of the other horror series.

The problem is that this interesting script is frequently bungled by director Chuck Russell (who went on to make the Dwayne Johnson vehicle The Scorpion King). This movie seemed like it was really going to work at first but it managed to shoot itself in the foot multiple times. First of all, the movie cheats on the extent of Freddy?s powers when it allows his Skeleton to attack someone in the real world (in poor rear projection no less), this isn?t anywhere near as bad as the BS they had him doing in the second film, but there?s no excuse for blatantly breaking your own rules. Secondly, whenever Freddy kills someone in this he throws out a bad one-liner pun, this is stupid cheesy and unscary. Thirdly, the dialogue and acting is horrible in this thing, it?s not much worse than in other slasher movies but it stands out more when the rest of the film doesn?t exude incompetence at all points.

The film?s third act is particularly problematic, when the kids start going into dreams together they have their own little fantasies that they play out, and some of them are really weird; particularly one who thinks she?s some kind of punk girl with knives but who doesn?t act remotely tough while in the costume, also another kid (a stereotype nerd) thinks he?s a wizard and he looks suspiciously similar to Harry Potter. Both of these fantasies seem completely out of place, I have a hunch that they (and the characters) were tacked on to raise the body count. There?s also a half-assed attempt to put Freddy into the context of religion.

Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is makes too many mistakes to really work; the acting is too bad, the leaps in internal logic are blatant and unneeded, and there?s just too much stupid stuff in it. However, compared to shit like Friday the 13th Part 3 this is really quite good. It?s a definite rebound for the franchise and it?s probably the best of the part 3s I saw.

The special effects are admirable, and the characters are definitely memorable, and the gore sequences are inventive - but it is still a flawed horror movie, but definitely the franchise's best sequel until 'New Nightmare'.
