Plot: A proper Indian girl shouldn't be spending her time playing soccer. That's what Jess's family thinks, anyway. An ardent fan of British soccer sensation David Beckham, Jess (Parminder K. Nagra) wants n...( read more read more... )othing more than to be on the field. And she has the talent to boot. But her parents want her to be just like her sister Pinky, who cooks chapati like a pro and wants a traditional Indian wedding. A sweet sports comedy with plenty of heart.

I didn't think I would be able to get into this movie since most of it is Indian. But the traditions and the music were wonderful. Jess broke through all barriers that were holding her in her boring mondain life and found herself.

Bend It Like Beckham is a Bollywood movie without the musical numbers, so what's left is a well-worn story told with emotional pulls. In this case, it's the story of the daughter who dreams of becoming something other than some arranged stranger's wife -- she's a gifted football ("soccer" to us Yanks) player -- which is of course crushingly disappointing to her parents, particularly the overbearing mother. Cliches and predictability abound, but that's never the point -- such films always comes down to actors and their direction, and here it can be said that Gurinder Chadha does a decent job directing, while Parminder Nagra does a good job acting. The movie's main problem is that it's a little more fussy than it needs to be -- there's an unnecessary romantic triangle complication for added drama, but perhaps more discouraging is its depiction of mothers as stubborn, misundertanding pains. Meanwhile, the fathers are acquitted by being good cops to their wives' bad cops. This is a bit inexcusable, given that the movie is directed by a woman, and that one of its obvious goals is the advocation of women's liberation -- one shouldn't necessarily smack down older women to raise up the younger ones -- but maybe this is also the truth the Chadha has experienced first hand. I can only assume. Either way, the movie passes as "inspirational entertainment," just overly familiar and a bit rough around the edges.

Jess Bhamra (Parminder K. Nagra) finds her way amid family pressures to conform to Indian traditions & her own desire to follow in her idol's cleats: British superstar David Beckham. Jess befriended by fellow soccer player Juliette "Jules" Paxton (Keira Knightley) recruits her for the hometown Hounslow Harriers for girls' soccer team. Joe has a crush on her coach, Joe (John Rhys Meyers)

It's about football which is my favourite sport, but Keira Knightly annoyed me too much to give it a better rating.

A chickflick guilty pleasure. I get way too much satisfaction from seeing Keira Knightley as the rejected one. Parminder is, however, clearly gorgeous and she is plain.

Pretty predictable film but still somewhat enjoyable and not frustrating. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers surely gets the attention due to his earlier work. It's okay.

Sometimes, to follow your dreams... you've got to bend the rules!

Oh, forget about Beckham is hardly a footballer now, at least for these 112 minutes. And you had a trauma watching Bride and Prejudice, don't judge the movie just yet, cause both are about the gathering of the cultures and stuff, but what you're about to see is something DIFFERENT.

Bend It Like Beckham is a comedy. It is really a COMEDY, I'm not talking the same page as High School Musical that it is so bad and it became something too hard to miss mocking it and then you will find that it is really funny. (and ironically, Flixster gave those snoring brats a higher rating than this movie) Okay, back to the review. The dialogs are fun, and especially this is no slapstick comedy which gives an out-of-style humor, it is FRESH and you will not find yourself yawning in the middle of the show.
Thank's to Gurinder Chadha who made it happened.
The casts gave a great starters for the career. When I saw Knightley here, I saw a girl who's ready to get those 2 Oscar nomination. And Parminder Nagra, I think she deserves a lot better career than what she gets now. Rhys-Meyers? Sorry, but he acted like an amateur, the Knightley-Praga duo totally outshined him.

Overall, Bend It Like Beckham is a fun, and it is a comedy that you can watch without borrowing Einstein's brain. And probably, Bend It Like Beckham is ONE OF THE BEST BRITISH COMEDY OF THE YEAR.

It's a warm fun film with a good sense of humor. There are a delightful parts wheter you like soccer or not. The film has got a nice story and is affectionately told with a positive message: being true to your own dreams.
Soccer, family circumstances, cultural pop and politics add up to a comedy is such a great work of Chada. He created a thought of happiness and hope in which we could all bend a ball like Beckham. A real feel good film from England!

Although this wasn't a huge hit I think it has become one of the cultural elite films of the decade. I've heard it referenced numerous times, often from people who haven't even seen it. A well written and empowering film.
