Plot:
"Suspense in a void" is how critic Pauline Kael described this action-packed hit from 1983. In other words, this is one of those flashy, superbly crafted high-tech thrillers in which the star is a mac...( read more

Another 80's flick that finds itself relevent today. Politics, military equipment in police hands and invasion of privacy play just as well now as they did then.
Ha,a terrible example of a chaotic script gone bad.An averagely made film, out of the huge number of productions specifically made for the "legendary" U.S. 80's of action-packed thrillers and methodical collisions. It's not really horrible. The unbelievably disjoint theory of helicopters conquering the skies is a truly weak point,no human contains a decent storyline and even if it's not measured as Badham's late failures e.g. Nick of Time,it still was a film with potential.
Scheider plays a police officer assigned the duty of piloting a helicopter sporting groundbreaking technology. However all is not as it seems as Scheider's worldweary policeman cottons on to a sinister scheme regarding the motives of the chopper, naturally Malcolm McDowell portrays the ringleader behind the conspiracy. The helicopter concept and the possibilities it presents is interesting but inevitably in this sort of action flick, silliness seeps in and cliches fall into place including one which involves Scheider's character having served in the war, cue haunting flashbacks. Typically 80's style camerawork and lighthearted exchanges between Scheider (once again proving his reliability as a leading man) and Daniel Stern's young cop keep things moving though and the aerial 'shoot em up' at the end is exciting if commonplace in this sort of film.
Although suffering a bit from James Bond syndrome, in which each and every one of the title helicopter's arsenal of weaponry is employed exactly once during the final act of the film, this 1983 Roy Scheider/Malcolm McDowell thriller is still a fun ride. I also love how almost every line of dialgoue serves as foreshadowing for a later scene. Now *that's* economy of screenwriting.
High tech action yarn with fine acting by Scheider, Oates and Stern with McDowell playng a perfect sneering baddie. Cool dogfights with a bit of humor thrown in..this is one thrilling ride
