Typical Clive Owen movie, where it sounds like it could be cool but then you watch it and something is off. Yet you still can't help but like him. What boosted this rating for me was the real time feel camera walkthrough when they were trying to escape the "city", I have to admit that was some nice action.
Cool movie idea, but they missed a few things to really keep the story together. Would probably fit so much better if you read the book.
This is the second time I've watched this. It felt like a documentary to my date, so i wouldn't recommend it as date material.. BUT holy SHIT.. this is an amazing psychological movie... This is absolutely the most frighteningly realistic dystopia I've seen on screen. Loved it.... Except for the ending.
how fucked would that future be
wouldent the mom be affraid since she is the only one who can have kids that her daughter or her would get raped all the time.
I think that this film is one of those fine examples of a film that gets better and better each time you see it, and thank god I just watched this again. It's a very dark film in general, and almost hard to swallow at times, however the acting is superb, and the story is totally original. The greatest thing about this film is just how well done it is, it's astounding. Alfonso Cuaron is a brilliant filmmaker with great style, and I only wish there were more films and filmmakers like him out there.
Children of Men is a hauntingly errie thriller. The plot revolves around getting the only pregnant woman into this safe zone place. The movie grips you from the start, and then it thrills you with an all too real atmosphere of a world gone aray. The cast of the movie is great, espically with the always excellent Michael Caine. But, damn it really chilled me to see one of my favorite actors get brutally executed. If you haven't seen this fantastic thriller you don't know what you're missing!
Good movie...
CHILDREN OF MEN is a fairly good futuristic drama with holes in its story a mile wide most of the premise unexplained and unresolved relatively unsuccessful at the box office.
The rest of the world has lapsed into chaos but the British, stoically, have put the remainder of their civil liberties into the fire and have settled down under an oppressive dictatorship to ward off foreign boarders and await inevitable extinction, though there are some violent dissidents called the fish.
Clive Owen and Juliane Moore deserve Oscar noms for their roles here. Owen magnificently shifts from the hopeless Theo to the fighter Theo, who will never give up until Knee, the pregnant woman (forgot the actress' name), is given in to an organization who hopes the birth of this child will give answers for the continuation of human race. Michael Caine and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also worth notice, for they are strong and talented actors and they really play their roles to perfection.
I like it.
This was... freakin' ... dull? Good realistic cinematography - you-are-there war correspondent quality... but there's just not very much IN this, not much content, not much whatever. I saw reviews that said this was great accessible science fiction, but I think the people who called it that and liked it must not have liked science fiction. Yawn.
I still want to see this film, but I can't seem to make it through whenever I try to watch it. I don't believe I ever will because the half-hour I saw fifty times is really boring. I'll continue to give it a shot though.
Great movie.
Awesome soundtrack.
Ruby Tuesday by Franco Battiato.
Check it out.
Now.
As in right now. :]
I never really liked any of Alfonso Cuaron's works, except for this one. "Children of Men" perfectly defines the expression, "edge-of-your-seat entertainment" because you'll literally find yourself hanging on the edge of your seats due to how frightening and intense this movie is.
This movie is going on my list of all time faves. great story. everything about this movie was good.
Wow. What a movie. It's the kind of movie where enough is happening to please those who like action (guns, and the like), but enough to think about for those who like depth to their films.
Brillian movie.
-=SPOILER ALERT=-
Just wish the ending wasn't as clear as it turned out to be. I'm not generally a fan of open endings. But this time, It would've made a complete masterpiece. The shot when they're both in the small boat floating & the camera is moving back & up...with all the fog around them where you're waiting for some light to flash. God, It could be beautiful.
-=SPOILER ALERT=-
Still a brilliant movie. Brings tears to the eyes.
Son John thrust this movie on me, and a very good movie it is -- a sort of reversal on the overpopulation doomsday scenario popular when PDJames's novel was written, so that underpopulation (inexplicable sterility) threatens to end the world. Quite gripping, ands highly original (we've seen various scenarios for utter disaster recently, usually involving humans becoming maniacs or worse), in that very bad things happen to understandable reasons -- not all related to humanity's impending doom, as internecine violence proceeds much as usual, to even less end than ordinarily. A good thriller, too, with many actual surprises.
Visually arresting and thought provoking. The thought of the impact each baby has just by being born will make you appreciate life even more (This strongly impacted my wife and I, as we are expecting). The extended takes that don't cut away reveal Cuaron is definitely a director who knows what he is doing. See it.
It's almost impossible to tell a completely new dystopian story - which is why I didn't feel I could give 'Children of Men' the full five stars. It's an amazing film but there's a lot of stuff in here that can be traced back to other movies of a similar genre (1984, Brazil). This said, the performances, cinematography and script are all superb though - and I was moved by the beauty of the whole thing.
This was really good.Strong performances and great acting & Cast. The dangerous journey for this poor girl my God!!Amazing how it all ended up the way it did.I recommend this one.
The year is 2027. Humans can no longer pro-create. Women are infertile. The youngest person alive has just died aged 18. The world is in chaos. Only Britain soldiers on.
These are the horrifying points that are made in the opening fifteen minutes of 'Children of Men', a startlingly realistic, genuinely disturbing film set in a post-apocalyptic future where there are no children. And it's shocking to witness what happens in a world without children. To witness the emotional turmoil of all those who suffer; to witness the lengths humans are pushed just for survival; to witness how a world without children can take away the good in people, and force them down a path of cruelty, and selfishness, because they have no idea what else to do.
Our story concerns Theo, a former activist who is asked by his ex-wife Julian, head of an infamous terrorist group, to transport an illegal immigrant across the dangerous south of the country to the safety of the coast. The story is a journey from devastation to refuge; despair to hope.
Director Alfonso Cauron avoids all the clichés of disaster films, the Government meetings, scientific advances, and instead focuses on the ordinary people who try to survive in this perilous future. The film is all the better for it. The action is thrilling, but understated. Even little anecdotes are strangely compelling. Characters you start to deeply care for are cruelly snatched away, and Cauron ensures that through all the horror and disaster experienced, we never lose sight of a ray of light, and hope, for everyone.
Clive Owen is superb as Theo, and supporting turns from Michael Caine, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Pam Ferris all impress, without diverting the quality from this amazing picture. As young Kee, Clare-Hope Ashitey is also a great find; despite her attempts at firmness and edge, she remains a young girl in an awful world. Through an extraordinarily authentic set design, dark, gloomy mise-en-scene, bleak cinematography and a hauntingly chilling atmosphere Cauron quite literally creates a future where for miles, all you can see is devastation. The audience see little other than a destroyed Britain, streets littered with bodies and buildings, and immigrants locked away in cages like animals. The impact is almost sickening.
There is little else I can write about 'Children of Men'. It is a film that you have to experience, not be informed of. Cauron successfully combines classical aesthetics with a raw, human story to thrust his provocative and powerful film to the forefront of recent cinema. Its originality and visual effect fail to diminish hours later, and the fate of the characters is permanently etched on the mind. Is this what our world could come too? Is this the future that awaits us?
WOW, this movie is spectacular. Long camera shots draw you into the scene. The camera work and set design in this movie, make it worth watching. The story and acting just add to what is a great movie. The realistic view of humans facing extinction.
Clive Own's acting is not acting but reality. He is that good.
Cuaron honestly depicts the greatest action scene since Saving Private Ryan.
I didn't remember this one being as good as it actually is. As an action movie, of course; it doesn't work that well as a sci-fi. Cuarón's direction is just perfect... I don't know the English name for "plano secuencia", but here there's a seven or eight minutes one, and not exactly a quiet one. Wow.

this movie got ripped off in the Oscars....Clive Owen deserved at least a nomination for this one!!!!!!!!!
Children of Men is an Amazing film.
I just watched it for the first time and I can safely say it's one of the best movies I've ever seen!
Dear Flixster,
Gary Oldman is not in this movie.
Sincerely,
The People Who Watched It
this film is the best film ever made. why flixster only gives it 3 stars is beyond me. yes it is a message film, but the message isnt preaching, its merely predicting the future. god dont ignore the fucking chaos to come!
Gary Oldman IS NOT in this movie. It's a mistake by the moderator.
Anybody see the nod to Pink Floyd? This was a very good movie. If you hate reality and violence then skip this one as you'll not be able to handle it.
