When it comes to romantic comedies, nobody does it better than the French. Their latest rom-com film is "Priceless" starring Audrey Tautou as a gold-digging social climber who falls in love with a bartender.
The French have created several unforgettable romantic flicks like "Amelie" (the greatest French film imo) and "Paris, je t'aime " (not really that much of a French film but some of the directors are from Paris) so clearly, you can't go wrong with a French romantic film.
The chemistry between Tautou's character Irene and Elmaleh's Jean is perfect. They just go with each other's flow and doesn't upstage one another. Irene is very much alike Tautou's previous role Amelie but this time the word "Gold Digger" is all over her. You wanna hate her but you can't because she's just too lovable to hate. Jean on the other hand is awkwardly marvelous trying oh so hard to impress his ladylove Irene. His facial expressions are priceless (pardon the pun)
Priceless is a priceless flick therefore it gets a solid four.
Goes to show that love CAN be bought. Lots of name-dropping, but that's to be expected. Surprisingly good for a French movie. Enjoyed it.
After davinci code, Tautou jumps back into her favorite genre, Comedy drama. she came into this genre with her most famouse movie, the Oscar winner Amelli but left it for testing her chance on other genres like drama (dirty pretty things) , Thriller (Da vinci code) , and history ( a very long engagement) . But in my opinion, she is a comedian by all means and I think selling rate of other movies shows that I am not alone with this idea.
Priceless is a very well built project, Casting is acceptable, camera is doing well without unusual movements or distorted angles. Directing is standard and editing is smooth.
story is not that Clice and the plot is well thinking one. I couldn't find holes or flaws in it. the movie is about two young poor french who seek money in elder high class community.
Anyway, I think it worth watching twice.
The only thing is its french language which may bothering you. but the copy I saw has a very good subtitle
Pierre Salvadori's delightful comedy, picturesquely set in a series of posh hotels on the French Riviera, throws together two terrific comic actors and an irresistible premise. This wispy romantic comedy offers droll and charming proof of love conquering materialism.
Light on its feet, frequently hilarious, and wonderfully entertaining.

I went to sete his with laura in covent garden odeon, and absolutely loved it. i think you'd love it even if you weren't mad on french like me and laura!
Not enough funny and enjoyable for a comedy. The actors are great and that make it the good point of it and overall the idea was quite great.
The movie would have been charming if the leading lady and love interest wasn't a shallow piece of useless crap.
GAMINE French actress Audrey Tautou has that mischievous face of insouciance which just absolutely lit up her signature role in 2001's quirky Amelie.
That quality was severely extinguished to criminal detriment in the dour The Da Vinci Code. Now, in charming, breezy Priceless, that instantly likeable look comes back into priceless full play once more as she exults in a range of playfulness which teeters between cool professional intent and silly-girl-in-love in a delightful two-person comedy act.
The other person is Moroccan-born actor Gad Elmaleh (Chouchou, The Valet), her accomplice in this romcom, who plays his part of follower and hankerer to an even more priceless level where he outshines Tautou herself.
They start out as strangers but end up as classic perfectly suited collaborators in a 1960s-style impish con game of love.
Tautou is Irene Mercier, a shameless golddigger who plies the playgrounds of the rich and elderly for a wealthy old man to set her up for life. Elmaleh is Jean Simon, a shy, lowly bartender who, for once in his life, is mistaken for somebody fancier.
In the tipsy lightness of the swanky hotel where they meet, with Jean's barman outfit resembling an affluent tux, Irene thinks that he is her ultimate passport to riches.
"I've left everything for you. Tell me I was right," she says to her newfound ticket after being dumped by her old one. Of course, it is a big mistake.
Before the first reel is over, she discovers, in a funny bedroom scene, that he is poorer that a cheap suit and is out on the carpet in a jiffy, towing her suitcases and golddigger's accessories. He, on the other hand, is smitten and cannot get her out of his mind.
Here, the movie takes off. The French are different. They like to partake in the pursuit of amour as a glorified parlour game, ideally acted out amid expensive cuisine, diamonds, dresses and exalted hotels where farce, fluff and fun converge in equal parts.
In the rarefied air of the splendid, rich man's seaside city of Nice, Irene and Jean scheme as accidental partners, she on her trail of sugar daddies, while he finds himself becoming the unintentional boy toy of rich old gentry.
A wealthy madam, Madeleine (Marie-Christine Adam), snags Jean as her escort for the price of a very expensive diamond-encrusted watch.
The winsome twosome stealthily compares notes - Irene urging Jean to "take it, take all you can right now" - with the student hilariously surpassing the teacher, before the realisation dawns, naturally, that the price of true love is no price at all.
It is an affair of light, whimsical piffle, but in director and co-writer Pierre Salvadori's hands, it is also an affair of cosy interplays, little interludes and sweet surprises which actually get funnier and more meaningful as the movie goes on.
As much as he understands cinematic humour - the way the bartender carries his tray becomes sweetly significant later - Salvadori understands that he has two marvellous actors who do not just spout lines.
They are masters of the art of facial expression. Tautou's big, naughty eyes turn her greedy motives into something endearing. Elmaleh's droopy, tentative peepers, looking constantly worried and jumpy as if saddled with an impossible 10-year plan, is a perfect foil for her elfin instincts.
I say this: Hollywood will remake this romcom. But it will not be able to make it this light, this fun and this priceless.
Funny, sweet film with a great comic turn from Gad Elmaleh and a charming performance by one of the most beautiful women on the planet, Audrey Tautou.
another charming performance from audrey tautau, even though shes a money grabbing man seducing schemer, but lets face it, its tautau, i wouldent say no, she works the south of france getting the rich older man, until a encounter witrh barman played by jean, played bygad elmaleh, turns bad, and the older guy dumps her, but jean is smitten with her, and she doesent like him as hes pennyless, so he plays her at her own game, and becomes a younger man for a rich women, and with her help, get as much as he can, while she does the same, but are they suited together. a well crafted french film, with 2 charming main leads, the story a typical french farce, with lots of ducking in and out of rooms, is funny, and great to watch, tautau, again has star quality,
the film is very entertaining and has it's funny moments, however there is not much genuine chemistry between the two leading characters.described as a ''modern'' breakfast at tiffany's due to a few similarities although a great film should not be compared with a timeless classic as this film is not.she maybe an audrey.....but a hepburn she's not!!!!
WOw, the poster looks like a comedy but it's totally not. Audrey Tautou is amazing in it. I wonder do those ppl really exist? They live impossible and seems empty. I had no idea that was Audrey first. It was a shock.
Directed by: Pierre Salvadori.
Starring: Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh, Marie-Christine Adam, Vernon Dobtcheff.
<< I'd like too...I'd love too... >>
The story follows Jean, an average, shy bartender who works in a fancy hotel. On a quiet night in the bar, he is mistaken by a beautiful opportunist as another millionaire for her to flirt with. But things soon turn around when she finds out who he really is and a series of events take both of them down a path they never expected each other to go.
This won't be the first time I'll say this in this review...but Priceless is one hell of a surprise. The main reason I picked this up was because of Audrey Tautou, who is up there as one of my favorite actresses. I got more than just her amazing presence.
Priceless succeeds on more levels than one. The obvious one where it slips into cliché is the ending...but a lot of people should know by now that in any romantic comedy, it's not the ending we want to be surprised at, its the trip there.
The direction is simple but never confined. Armed with some exquisite locations and set designs, Pierre Salvadori really has the room to expand the amazing tones of the script and places them nicely into every frame...and the script is certainly a surprise. Sweet, charming and witty are few words to describe the content. Throughout a majority of the film, these charming characters are given a rather sweet spark to work with and they get there avoiding cliché along the way, twisting its way through in a rather witty style, its surprising to see that it doesn't fall into another annoying rom-com.
The performances are brilliant. Audrey Tautou continues to show her incredible presence and charm in everything she tackles and its her greatest performance in years...and shes even more beautiful than ever. Alongside a very good supporting cast, Gad Elmaleh impressed me more than I expected to be. He successfully manages to play the ways of the character in such a smooth and realistic way without any slip-ups, from the shy, stumbling 'virgin' to life...to the charming, believable millionaire, its something worth mentioning.
Priceless is a surprise. Alongside obvious brilliant performances, the production values and some exquisite cinematography and set design also add the right effect to the underlying tones of this incredible little film with help from some sharp direction. The ending is obvious, but the trip there is 'Priceless'.
Muito bom!! Muito engraçado e ao mesmo tempo denso. Irene é uma prostituta de luxo que acaba caindo nas próprias armadilhas quando conhece um funcionário do hotel que se apaixona por ela.
This is a delightful film, a nod to the old style romantic "mistaken identity" comedies of the 40's & 50's (expect some predictable plot twists), but with a very modern flair.
I must admit that at first it was hard for me to accept Audrey Tautou as a self centered "gold-digger". Not because of anything she was doing...just because I've come to know/love her from her previous characters as sweet & kind. But she does a great job and by the end of the film she has brought enough depth to her charater that you end up liking her to spite all her flaws.
Newcomer (to me anyway) Gad Elmaleh is absolutely adorable and charming, the perfect counter-point to Audreys rather cold and calculating character. Though there are points when you want to just slap him and say "snap out of it!"...ultimately his devotion makes you believe in "love at first sight".
All though there was an underlying sadness for me thinking about the people who pay for companionship and those who are the "paid companions" who don't feel they are capable/worthy of more...it is mostly a really sweet, funny and enjoyable film.
Il est trop bien ce film . Biensur parce que c'est un film français ! Gad Elhaleh , Audrey Tautou , que de bons acteurs .
Je vous conseille de le regarder !
I'd like to watch it, but it's look like I have to wait till the DVD shown up, coz it's unlikely gonna played in my country...
