But Jack's idyllic life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa, steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the Governor's beautiful daughter, Elizabeth Swann. Elizabeth's childhood friend, Will Turner, joins forces with Jack to commandeer the fastest ship in the British fleet, the HMS Interceptor, in a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl. The duo and their crew are pursued by Elizabeth's betrothed, the debonair, ambitious Commodore Norrington, aboard the HMS dauntless. Unbeknownst to Will, there is a curse that has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead--when exposed to moonlight, they are exposed to living skeletons. The curse they carry can be broken, only if a once-plundered treasure is restored.

Jack Sparrow: "The only rules that really matter are these: what a man can do and what a man can't do. For instance, you can accept that your father was a pirate and a good man or you can't. But pirate is in your blood, boy, so you'll have to square with that some day. And me, for example, I can let you drown, but I can't bring this ship into Tortuga all by me onesies, savvy? So, can you sail under the command of a pirate, or can you not?"

Pirates of the Caribbean is a sweeping action-adventure story set in an era when villainous pirates scavenged the Caribbean seas. This roller coaster tale teams a young man, Will Turner, with an unlikely ally in rogue pirate Jack Sparrow. Together, they must battle a band of the world's most treacherous pirates, led by the cursed Captain Barbossa, in order to save Elizabeth, the love of Will's life, as well as recover the lost treasure that Jack seeks. Against improbable odds, they race towards a climactic confrontation on the mysterious Isla de Muerta. Clashing their swords in fierce mortal combat, Will and Jack attempt to recapture The Black Pearl ship, save the British navy, and relinquish a fortune in forbidden treasure thereby lifting the curse of the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie that has something for everyone - adventure, humor, romance, action, drama, even a bit of the supernatural. And all in just the right doses so that one doesn't overpower any of the others. The writing is wonderful - clever and articulate - and brought alive by a first rate cast. Keira Knightley was only 17 when this was filmed and her acting skills bring to mind Lauren Bacall at the same age.

Johnny Depp IS Captain Jack Sparrow, having stepped right into the persona of a pirate who is more comfortable on sea than on land. Ruthless in his quest to retrieve his beloved ship and stay "afloat", as it were, he keeps us guessing as to what really lies in his heart, what makes him tick. Half the fun of the movie - most of it really - comes from watching to see what he will do and say next. Yes, it's a long movie, but I really couldn't find a boring part in the whole thing.

See it - you won't be disappointed.

Boring, and too contemporary! I think the fact that the special effects crew for The Lord of the Rings would have used the skeleton special effects much better than they did in this movie. (Because The Lord of the Rings crew had spent all this time and effort to put together all the Special Effects for the City of the Dead, but then they saw tThe Pirates of the Carribean trailer and realised their special effects were really similar to the special effects in The Pirates of the Caribbean so they had to do theirs again! I do commend the crew for Pirates of the Caribbean for doing special effects as good as The Lord of the Rings though!)

Best show in the world. I love this movie. Not only is there some pretty cute guys (Orly and Depp) but it's just really fun. A great story with fun characters, one of Johnny's best. This one is a classic.

It has pirates and un-dead pirates, so yeah I suppose it's good for Halloween.

I like this movie a lot although I don't see it as being as special as most women do lol. It's entertaining and a better pirate movie than critics give it credit for.

I love this movie. For his debut, Captain Jack Sparrow was everything a good hero should be: funny, drunk, talented, and cool. This was a really good movie - everything was great about it from the music score to the plot. But there's something that could have been better about it - I just can't put my finger on it.

If you're in the mood for a revisionist pirate story, built around all of the staples and clichés you've come to know, love and expect in any film of this sort, you'll probably be content enough with what Pirates of the Caribbean delivers. Like Silverado did for Westerns, this is more of a love letter to the great pirate movies of old, filled to the brim with knowing references and tongue-in-cheek homage. So, it does have its share of gratuity in the action department, but at least there's plenty of time for you to stretch your legs, go to the rest room or grab some popcorn. It is a popcorn movie, after all.

''When you marooned me on that god forsaken spit of land, you forgot one very important thing, mate: I'm Captain Jack Sparrow.''

Blacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.

    Johnny Depp: Jack Sparrow

Pirates of the Carribean - The curse of the Black Pearl is one of the hits and most enjoyable thing to come out of a Disney collaboration for years. A return to form without a doubt.

The cast in Pirates was simply divine and they generously let rip with all the fun, becoming infectious for us, the audience.
Although they did not let this sacrifice one shred of dedication to their respective performances.
Jack Davenport, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, and outrageously talented Johnny Depp just swept us away.
Starlet Kiera Knightley, not bad given her young age, dazzles and shines in all her glory during the film.

Davenport, Rush and Depp all delivered reasonably complex characters despite the superficial story line. Norrington is ambitious but also has a strong compassionate streak. Barbossa's integrity is his evilness, yet we can also see his weaknesses and humanity. Sparrow is like that friend we all have who is a bad boy but would do anything for you in the end, along with the many other traits Depp built into this character. Depp, by far, is the one who jumped off the screen and grabbed you and pulled you into the show. It's hard to say more, the guy is just astonishingly freakin' talented.

''Put it away, son. It's not worth you getting beat again.''

''You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you.''

''That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?''

I think that there were some nice themes in this movie. I especially liked the ending, given that Jack Sparrow spent a good deal of the movie in handcuffs, in jail, in the brig, walking the plank, stranded on an island, with guns pointed at him, on the gallows, etc. Combine all of that with his confession to Elizabeth (on the Island) of what the Black Pearl really is. Did we get set up to love that ending or what? I also like that the movie started and ended on the same song, and that Elizabeth at the beginning held the key to Jack's situation at the ending.

The scenes with Jack and Barbossa in them together were by far the best. It takes until about halfway through the movie until we get them face to face. Their exchange at the plank-walking was priceless, as was the "parle" on board the Pearl. But that sword fight in the cave took all! It's new and it's classic all at once and it just feels like what pirate-movie-making should be all about.

There's a lot of great action in the movie complete with sword fights and guns. The movie also boasts a hefty amount of comedy as well, mostly provided by a couple of goofy pirates who continuously bicker and fight and do all sorts of crazy things together. The highlight scene in the movie is when right before Captain Jack battles Barbossa, the undead pirates are coming from beneath the ships and revert from human form to skeleton form when the enter the moonlight.

''You're daft, lady! You both are!''

    ''Daft like Jack.''

Black Pearl is truly a classic, it's humourous, it's imaginative, and it's full of swashbuckling action. It must have been a gamble trying to make a movie laugh out loud action about pirates, but they pulled it off with shining results.
The special effects for this movie are breath taking for a Disney Film and the time. This is the best of the series in my opinion, but the sequels go downhill, for money and Box-Office, whereas this Gold offering retains originality.

Gore Verbinski has directed a memorable class offering that will be considered an unforgettable experience for generations to come. Black Pearl like Matrix for example shows how the original can exist on it's own without any need for a sequel.

''The only rules that really matter are these: what a man can do and what a man can't do.''
