good political film following a womens atempts to run for vice president, when the current one dies and various atempts to dicredit her along the way, notable for great performances, slater, allen and bridges all good, but gary oldman is a fasinating watch as the guy out to put her down, a entertaining political thriler, looking at washington as cut throat career to be in, and the politics involved

Proof that propaganda is ugly, no matter how righteous the intention behind it. It may pretend to offer hope, but only suffocates it. Because there is no solution, until the problem is clear. And as cynical as the film appears at first, it's depiction of the problem is absurdly simplistic. It shows the people in charge as a bunch of idealists struggling between their morals and their want of genuine greatness. Money associated pressures never so much as enter the equation. Not to mention all the thinly veiled pro-democratic-party propaganda. My views may be FAR to the left, but even I couldn't stomach how manipulative the film is about making certain that the good guys look like Democrats while the bad seed is obviously a repulsive little Republican (the true bad seed, not the one used within the thin veiling process). There is only one spectrum of human motivation as it relates to truth. Either you honestly seek it, or you manipulate it as a means to an end. This film, for all its beautiful rhetoric, fits at an extreme end of the latter end of this spectrum.

Brilliantly acted political thriller about a vice president nomination causing power games within the US government. Full of great dialogues delivered by an outstanding cast. Especially Joan Allen and Gary Oldman (in great make up effects) give excellent performances while they throw their lines at each other. While the two hours consist mostly of talking they pass by like nothing and the last 15 minutes come up with one or another pretty unexpected twist. An excellent statement about politics in today's USA. Intelligent, rewarding and important, especially in an election year.

Not b ad at all, pity about the lame ending..

It's easy to see why this flick got such a great cast. The premise is interesting and ithe way it presents the motives of the different characters gives a lot of food for thought.

Joan Allen is v good as per usual, giving her character depth and dignity in the face of the acuusations that she has to deal with whilst attempting to take on the role of the vice president. It's not s show stopping operformance or anything, but she resisits the urge to go over the top which is a good thing. Gary Oldman is pretty cool but ultimately doesn't have a great deal to do. He does manage to sell the pretty rubbish reasons behind the smear campaign that he orchestrates which is something in itself. My fav's though, were Christian Slater and Jeff Bridges. Although he doesn't always make great choices, Slater is always watchable and he is pretty good here. At the end of the day though, this is the dudes show. I loved every minute of the time that he was on screen (apart from the end speech). He brings a real gravity and charisma to his president. Always in control, and always attempting to out fox his chef with bizarre dinig requests, the guy is just pure class.

The problem is that the ending just doesn't ring true to JoanAllen's character. Had the flcik ended without the closing 10 minutes or so, this would have been far better. I guess that they have to follow that cheesy formula though.... What a shame...

A textbook example of what political character assassination looks like. A bit overdramatical, but every bit as relevant to today's politics.

Surprising film. Good themes, great performances. Oldman was ROBBED of a Best Supporting Oscar due to fall-out with the studio who subsequently didn't submit his name.

This was another one of those movies I didn't expect much from, but was very happy to see! Jeff Bridges plays POTUS better than I've seen in a while (he brings a little humanity to the part) and Gary Oldman, as always, plays a pseudo-bad guy in this political thriller. Joan Allen, poked and questioned like no other since Anita Hill, is so good in this...

Great acting, Joan Allen is a wonderful lead but the real awe is in Bridge's and Oldman's essentric roles. At times the cliche patriotic music lowers the achievements made in the screenplay and preformances. Altogether a very good political thriller.

I would have given this film a five, if the studio hadn't changed the film at the last minute to put a democratic spin on it w/o noitifying the director or production co.(Gary Oldman's prod co). Once again, you won't even recognize Gary Oldman.

A uncompromising tale of personal standards and political intrigue. The big question asked throughout the film is so important because the main character lives above the mudslinging and spin. It suggests a higher moral for each of us to live by, and is a tight thriller. Joan Allen in one of her best performances.

One of my favorite political dramas of all time. I loved Bridges as the pres. Joan Allen is good and Gary Oldman as the sleazy republican senator was terrific. I loved the end, when we find out the truth. Good stuff.

An exhilerating thriller/drama with a knock-out performance by Joan Allen. This movie touches on many important societal issues, including the corruption that comes with power and the double-standards in society regarding gender. This is one of my favorite political thrillers ever because it has a message and is executed very well-- and delivers all the goods. Definitely a must-see!

This is Joan Allen's best work yet! I absolutely love this movie. I don't care for her religious ideals. I've never cared about politics, I don't know if we've ever had a president that's atheist. If a man's sex life isn't relevant a woman's shouldn't be either.
